Boro line up audacious bid for Downing return

Middlesbrough are reportedly in talks with West Ham to bring Stewart Downing back to Teeside, with the winger's future seemingly uncertain at Upton Park.

The signing of Dimitri Payet is thought to have put real pressure on Downing's place in the side, despite being a key figure in the Hammers' top half finish last season.

Since a move away from the Riverside in 2009, Downing has racked up transfer fees amounting to around £30m, as well as earning 35 caps for England.

Downing had a direct hand in more league goals than any other player for West Ham last season (6 goals and 8 assists), while only Kieran Trippier delivered more accurate crosses (82) n 2014/15.

Boro are hoping to go one better than last season under Aitor Karanka, having been beaten play-off finalists at the hands of Norwich in May, and are keen to add Premier League quality to their ranks.
