Bayern defender’s future hinges on Hummels return

Bayern Munich defender Medhi Benatia is weighing up a return to Italy and his future could be decided if the club are successful in re-signing Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund this summer, reports ESPN.

Benatia, 29, has struggled to nail down a regular starting berth since making the switch from Roma two years ago in a €28m (£22m) deal and his future is up in the air following news Bayern are looking to sign another defender at the end of the season.

Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has already confirmed the Bundesliga champions-elect are in talks with Dortmund over a deal but Thomas Tuchel’s side have made it abundantly clear there is no room to negotiate on their valuation of the German defender.

Of players to have made at least six appearances in the Champions League this season, only Toni Kroos (94.7%) has a higher pass success rate than Benatia (93.5%).
