West Ham have announced they have reached an agreement with Marseille for Dimitri Payet to return to the Ligue 1 outfit in a deal worth £25m.
The Hammers have been locked in talks with Marseille for weeks over the fee to bring Payet back to his homeland and a breakthrough has finally been made even though West Ham initially wanted £35m for their star creator.
Payet, 29, hasn’t played since West Ham’s 5-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup third round at the start of the month after telling the club he wanted to leave and return to Marseille.
The France international spent two years at Marseille before joining West Ham at the start of last season in a deal worth £10m and established himself as one of the best players in the Premier League during a sensational debut campaign in England.
However, the Euro 2016 star has struggled to replicate the same type of performances this season in what has been a very difficult season for West Ham.
Nevertheless, despite having missed almost a month of action no player has created more chances in Europe’s top five leagues than Payet this season (74).
