Cologne rule out sale of star striker

Cologne have reiterated their stance that star striker Anthony Modeste is not for sale amid talk they rejected a €40m (£34m) bid from a Chinese Super League outfit.

Modeste, 28, has been in tremendous form for the Bundesliga outfit this season having previously flopped during a short stint at Blackburn in the Premier League back in the 2011/12 campaign.

The French striker has been one of the most prolific strikers in Europe’s top five leagues this season and Cologne are understandably not interested in cashing in on their star asset.

“Our stance is clear. We won’t jeopardise our sporting goals because of a transfer, even though it’s about a lot of money,” their sporting director, Jorg Schmadtke, told Kicker, via Get German Football. “We’ve already said that to the [Chinese] club and all advisers in this matter.”

Without Modeste’s goals, Cologne would only have scored 13 goals in the Bundesliga this season and they would not be anywhere near the top six. In fact, no player has scored more goals in the Bundesliga this season than Modeste (17).
