Real Madrid star suffers freak injury

Marco Asensio has been ruled out of Real Madrid’s first Champions League game of the season after suffering a freak shaving injury, reports ABC.

Zinedine Zidane revealed in his pre-match press conference ahead of Madrid’s home match against APOEL Nicosia that Asensio was no longer in contention due to an infected pimple.

Asensio was unable to train with his Madrid teammates earlier in the week as he is unable to pull up his socks due to an infected pimple as a result of shaving his legs.

The Spain international is widely regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in European football but will be red-faced after being kept sidelined with such a bizarre injury.

With Karim Benzema also ruled out action, it leaves Madrid short of options in attack although Zidane can welcome back Cristiano Ronaldo for Wednesday’s encounter with APOEL.

Asensio has already scored four goals in all competitions this season, including a goal in each leg of their Spanish Super Cup win over Barcelona at the start of the campaign and a double-goal salvo in their 2-2 draw with Valencia last month.

In fact, the 21-year-old only scored three league goals across the whole of last season and looks destined to shatter that milestone this time around.
