Chelsea manager Antonio Conte will give David Luiz a rest this weekend when the Premier League leaders take on Wolves in the FA Cup fifth-round as they continue to monitor his knee problem, reports The Daily Telegraph.
Luiz, 29, has been struggling with a knee injury since being on the receiving end of a horror tackle from Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero back in December and sparked fears he could be out for a prolonged period after posting a picture on his social media account suggesting he was about to undergo surgery.
The Brazil international has joined Chelsea on the final day of the summer transfer window and was dressed up as a panic signing by Conte only for the charismatic defender to establish himself as one of the best players in the league this season.
Luiz has arguably been the glue for which Chelsea’s back three has been so successful this term for the current Premier League leaders but Conte’s side are keen to look after the defender as he continues to battle with a heavy strapping to his knee.
Chelsea make the trip to Wolves, who knocked out Liverpool in the last round, on Saturday and Conte will give Luiz the weekend off before they resume their title tilt against Swansea the following weekend.
Only James Milner (27) and Harry Maguire (22) have had more shots of all defenders in the Premier League this season than Luiz (21).
