Aston Villa want to re-sign Gareth Barry

Aston Villa want to re-sign Gareth Barry if they are promoted to the Premier League, reports The Daily Mirror.

Steve Bruce’s side have confirmed their place in the Championship play-offs and hope to secure a return to the Premier League after a two-year absence.

John Terry’s current Villa deal is due to expire at the end of the season and the 37-year-old will almost certainly leave if he helps Bruce’s side win the play-offs.

The veteran defender previously vowed he would never play in the same league as former club Chelsea, which is why he dropped down to the Championship and joined Villa last summer.

Bruce will look to replace Terry with someone equally experienced and has identified a move for former Villa midfielder Barry, who is the Premier League’s all-time appearance maker.

Barry spent 11 years at Villa after making his professional debut in 1998 before moving to Manchester City in 2009.

The 37-year-old extended his West Brom contract by a further 12 months at the start of last month but could be tempted with a return to Villa where it all started for him 20 years ago.

West Brom will be relegated to the Championship this weekend if they fail to beat Tottenham on Saturday.

In 257 Premier League appearances since August 2009, Barry has only committed three errors that have directly led to an opposition goal.
