Serge Gnabry to leave Werder Bremen after one season

Werder Bremen have announced Serge Gnabry has exercised the clause in his contract that will allow the former Arsenal winger to leave the club at the end of the month.

Gnabry only joined Bremen from Arsenal last summer after being linked with a surprise move to Bayern Munich, but the 21-year-old has flourished for the Bundesliga outfit despite their struggles for most of last season.

The Bremen ace’s performances were so impressive that he has forced his way into contention with the Germany national team and even scored a hat-trick on debut against San Marino.

However, Bremen have now confirmed that Gnabry has triggered a clause in his contract that will allow him to make the next step in his career.

“After a very good first year for him at Werder, Serge has informed us that he would like to take the next step in his career,” managing director Frank Baumann told the club’s official website.

“He will therefore activate a clause in his contract and leave the club at the end of the month.”

Talk of a potential move to Bayern looks to have passed and now Gnabry is widely expected to join up-and-coming German side Hoffenheim.

Julian Nagelsmann can provide Gnabry with Champions League football next season after securing a hugely impressive fourth place finish in the Bundesliga last season. Gnabry’s arrival would only bolster their offensive options ahead of the welcome of European football.

In the Bundesliga last season only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (15), Robert Lewandowski (12) and Mario Gomez (11) scored more goals away from home than Gnabry (10).
