Manchester United goalkeeper wants January exit

Sergio Romero wants to leave Manchester United in January in order to secure his spot as Argentina’s No.1 goalkeeper at the 2018 World Cup, claims The Independent.

The 30-year-old has spent the last three campaigns at Old Trafford behind David de Gea in the pecking order and managed to remain as Argentina’s No.1 during that time.

However, Romero has only made five appearances in all competitions this season and is growing increasingly concerned that a lack of playing time will cost him a place at this summer's World Cup.

As Jose Mourinho looks to bolster his squad this month, Romero’s desire to leave is a dilemma he could certainly do without as his departure would require a new deputy to De Gea.

To make things worse, Romero has established himself as one of the best back-up goalkeepers in the Premier League under Mourinho and it’s hard to see where United could sufficiently replace the 30-year-old without spending.

Romero has kept 14 clean sheets in 23 appearances under Mourinho in all competitions.
