‘Valdes for sale’ – Van Gaal

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says that goalkeeper Victor Valdes is up for sale after the Spaniard “refused to play” for the club’s second XI.

Valdes, 33, was omitted from United’s touring squad of the States and Van Gaal has confirmed the former Barcelona player will no longer be part of his plans, brandishing his attitude as a “big disappointment”.

“He is not selected because he does not follow my philosophy,” said Van Gaal. “There is not one place for one player – the philosophy is how you play football and how you maintain your match rhythm. For example, he refused last year to play in our second team.

“That is one aspect of our philosophy but there are a lot of others for how you play like a goalkeeper for Manchester United. When you are not willing to follow the principles of the philosophy there is only one way and that is out.”

Valdes only signed an 18-month contract at United in January, but was brought in by Van Gaal as back up to David de Gea and has only played 106 minutes of football, conceding one goal.  The former Spain international has since hit back at Van Gaal's comments over Twitter showing the U21 games he took part in.
