Liverpool were three points clear at the top of the Premier League on New Year’s Day, and the quest for a quadruple in Jurgen Klopp’s final season at the club was well and truly on when they secured the Carabao Cup in February. The Reds, however, fell away from the summit towards the end of April, with back-to-back defeats against Crystal Palace and Atalanta (in the Europa League) all but confirming their fate.
Key Player - Mohamed Salah
For as long as he remains under contract at Anfield, Mohamed Salah is likely to retain his status as Liverpool’s most crucial player. In a campaign disrupted by the Africa Cup of Nations, the 32-year-old managed 18 goals and 10 assists in 28 league starts, while he also created more big chances than any other player in Europe’s top five divisions (22).
Signing to Watch - N/A
At the time of writing, Liverpool remain the only Premier League team yet to make a permanent signing this summer, and in the week leading up to the new season, failed in their pursuit of Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi. At this stage, it remains to be seen whether the club's hierarchy will look to strengthen Arne Slot's first-team squad.
