Championship round-up: Minnows pull off shock result as Lampard sees red

Frank Lampard was shone the first red card of his managerial career during Derby’s shock 1-0 defeat away to Championship minnows Rotherham on Saturday, one of many surprise results across the weekend’s action. Only two of the top 13 clubs won in gameweek seven, with Brentford and Bristol City pulling to within one point of unbeaten Leeds at the table’s summit.

Rotherham have made a typically inconsistent start to the season but picked up their third victory of the campaign with a hard-fought triumph over Derby. Ryan Manning scored the only goal of the game, converting from the spot just after the hour mark. The 22-year-old finished gaemweek seven as the highest WhoScored rated player in the Championship (8.67).

As well as scoring the winner, the Irish midfielder created five goalscoring chances for his team and also won five aerial duels. Derby had 63% of possession but Manning helped reduce the Rams to just four shots on target by chipping in with three tackles during his impressive display.

Towards the top of the table, Brentford continued their fine start to the campaign with 2-0 home win over Wigan. Neal Maupay has been the league’s outstanding performer thus far and the 22-year-old now has seven league goals for the campaign after netting both times for the Bees.

Fresh from serving a retrospective suspension, Maupay quickly made amends for his team by single-handily brushing Wigan aside at Griffin Park. The French striker had eight shots and incredibly hit the target with seven of them, earning the second highest WhoScored rating of the weekend in the process (8.59).

Maupay would have scored more had it now been for Wigan goalkeeper Christian Walton, who rounds off the top three WhoScored rated players from GW7 (8.42). The 22-year-old’s eight saves helped keep the scoreline respectful after the Latics played more than 30 minutes with 10 men.

While the aforementioned trio can be proud of their individual performances, the same cannot be said for Derby’s Tom Lawrence, who finished the weekend as the lowest WhoScored rated player in the Championship (5.24). The Wales international was shown his marching orders just before the hour mark against Rotherham before later being joined by Lampard in the referee’s bad books.
