England confirmed top spot in their Euro 2020 qualification group with a 4-0 win away to Kosovo on Sunday to conclude a relatively impressive campaign for Gareth Southgate's men.
The Three Lions certainly have the offensive options to give any side in Europe a problem, illustrated by the fact they averaged 4.6 goals per game in qualifying, but problems at the back and at the base of their midfield continue to linger.
Southgate will by now know the bulk of the squad he will want to take to next summer's tournament but some question marks still remain over a number of positions.
Despite the fact Euro 2020 does not start until June, England hopefuls are actually running out of chances to impress Southgate.
International football will be on a four-month hiatus after Euro 2020 qualification concludes on Tuesday and England only have two friendlies before the squad for next summer's tournament is announced.
Here we take a look at five players who hope to be knocking on the door for a place in Southgate's squad ahead of next summer's tournament, with additional information about their Football INDEX share prices.
Chris Smalling (AS Roma) - 7.26 rating

Despite coming across as Mr Nice Guy, Southgate showed his ruthless streak when putting Chris Smalling's England career on the shelf back in 2017. Smalling ball-playing skills were not deemed good enough by the England manager and the way he wanted the Three Lions to build from the back.
The 29-year-old hasn't made an England squad since then and is unlikely to for as long as Southgate remains head coach. However, given England's woes at the back, is it at least worth reassessing Smalling as an option to partner Harry Maguire?
Unfancied by Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Smalling joined Serie A giants Roma on a season-long loan deal in the summer and has been a revelation in Italy. Smalling has been hailed as the best defender in Serie A this season, reaffirmed by the fact he is the highest WhoScored rated defender in the division (7.26).
Not only that, but Smalling has completed 90.4% of his passes in the league this season, by far his best return in a single-campaign this decade.
Dele Alli (Tottenham) - 6.86 rating

Dele Alli is in serious danger of missing out on a place in Gareth Southgate's squad after a torrid 16 months since the 2018 World Cup. The Tottenham midfielder was once considered a first-team regular for England but his career has stagnated hugely since England's last major tournament.
Alli wasn't completely fit at the 2018 World Cup and it was clear to see in his lacklustre performances, even though England still managed to reach the last four of the competition for the first time in 28 years. By now it would have been hoped Alli had rediscovered the same form he showed in the two years prior to Russia, when he played a direct hand in 44 goals in 73 league appearances from midfield, but he hasn't.
Since then, Alli has only scored or assisted 10 goals in 30 league appearances and he continues to struggle for full fitness. Mason Mount, James Maddison and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are currently ahead of him in the pecking order for places for England, while Alli's club team-mate, Harry Winks, even impressed in his preferred position in Sunday's win over Kosovo.
After starting England's first two qualifiers, Alli didn't feature in any of their subsequent six qualifiers. Forcing his way back into the England reckoning won't happen, however, until Alli is back in the first-team picture at Tottenham on a regular basis.
Jack Grealish (Aston Villa) - 7.35 rating

It seemed at once stage that Jack Grealish was nailed on to make the England squad for this current international break after enjoying a barnstorming month of October - winning the WhoScored Player of the Month award in the Premier League - only just to fall short.
Grealish, who has not made a single England squad since switching international allegiance from Ireland over three years ago, was instead listed as first reserve for any injuries. None were forthcoming and Grealish instead spent a few days winding down in Dubai ahead of this weekend's Premier League action.
The Aston Villa captain can count himself unlucky, particularly as Southgate believes the only position he can play for England is out wide. The 24-year-old has been forced to be incredibly patient for England recognition and looks to have ran out of time to feature for the Three Lions at the next major tournament, particularly as their are only two friendlies before Southgate names his squad for Euro 2020.
Only Kevin De Bruyne (30) has created more goalscoring chances from open play than Grealish (24) in the Premier League this season, while the Villa star is also the most fouled player in the division (41). Southgate may have missed a trick by at least not having a look at Grealish.
Jesse Lingard (Manchester United) - 6.33 rating

Jesse Lingard was one of England's most-used outfielders at the 2018 World Cup, with only Harry Kane racking up more minutes playing time for the Three Lions of creative and forward options available to Southgate.
Lingard's energy on and off the ball was highly valued for club and country around that time and he also had a tendency of scoring big goals in big moments. That is no longer the case. And hasn't been for a long time.
Lingard is on course to finish 2019 without a single goal or assist in the Premier League and his record in the competition is remarkably poor. Since May 2018, Lingard has played a direct hand in just six goals in the Premier League and they all fell in the month of December last year. It means Lingard has failed to score or assist in 13 of the last 14 months of Premier League football and he has just one game left in November to prevent it becoming 14 of the last 15.
The United ace didn't make a single appearance during England's Euro 2020 qualification campaign and is danger of being forgotten about by the Three Lions, if he hasn't already.
Eric Dier (Tottenham) - 6.31 rating

England are considered among the favourites to win Euro 2020 but there are still some huge areas of concern that need addressing before the tournament starts. Finding a partner to Harry Maguire at centre-back is one and nailing down a first-choice holding midfielder is certainly another.
Harry Winks and Declan Rice are currently the frontrunners to take up that shielding role in front of England's back four but there are still questions marks about both young midfielders. While a wonderful technician on the ball, it's unclear whether Winks has the durability to do a screening job, while Rice's positioning has been called into question on several occasions in qualifiying.
Eric Dier has previously carried out that role and done so well on odd occasion but is currently completely out of the picture for club and country. Like Alli, Dier has struggled for full fitness this season and made just two starts and one substitute appearance in the Premier League.
The fact Dier can play in midfield and defence will appeal to Southgate, as it has in the past, but the 25-year-old is in no shape to warrant an international call-up right now. The current mess engulfing Tottenham makes it difficult to see Dier and Alli regaining their best form in time for Euro 2020.
