Season Review: Manchester City set foundations to become Premier League greats

The 2017/18 Premier League campaign will go down as one where Manchester City broke nearly every record under the sun. 

Pep Guardiola’s side scored a stoppage time winner against Southampton on the final day of the season to become the first side in Premier League history to record 100 points in a single campaign. 

Not only that, but City set a new record for goals scored (106) and wins recorded in a 38-game season (32).

Suggestions this City team are the best Premier League side of all-time are premature, but they have certainly laid the foundations to achieve that status in the seasons to come. 

SUCCESS – RAHEEM STERLING

There have been so many success stories in Manchester City’s title-winning season but none more so enjoyable than watching Raheem Sterling’s blossom into the footballer everyone thought he could become.

Prior to this season, Sterling’s career was stagnating. Since exploding onto the scene during the 2013/14 campaign, the England international hasn’t kicked on as many would have hoped.

However, Guardiola has really brought the best out of Sterling this season and now the 23-year-old is one of the best attackers in the Premier League.

Sterling finished the season with 18 league goals - double his previous best in a single-league campaign. Not only that, but the City No.7 provided 11 assists for his team-mates.

Sterling is one of only five Premier League players that registered double figures for goals and assists in the 2017/18 campaign.

WHERE TO IMPROVE

Having set a new record for the amount of points won in a Premier League season, it’s hard to point out where City can really improve.

However, there are areas in the squad that Guardiola will address this summer. Yaya Toure needs replacing and a long-term successor for Fernandinho is also on the agenda.

City failed with moves for Alexis Sanchez and Riyad Mahrez in January, which also suggests Guardiola wants to beef up his attacking options.

Fabian Delph did well in a make-shift left-back position for most of the season, but Guardiola may look to sign a recognised player in that area of the pitch to provide competition with Benjamin Mendy next season.
