Record-breaking Bayern hitman leads Bundesliga Team of the Season
There were twists and turns aplenty on the final day of the Bundesliga season. Robert Lewandowski waited until the last minute to break Gerd Muller's goal-record, notching his 41st league goal of the campaign in Bayern Munich's 5-2 win over Augsburg. At the other end of the table, Werder Bremen were relegated from the top-flight for the first time in 40 years as Arminia Bielefeld survived the drop and FC Koln battled to finish the playoff spot.
With that in mind, we run over the WhoScored.com Bundesliga team of the season, an XI spearheaded by player of the season Lewandowski.
Rafal Gikiewicz (Augsburg) - 6.83
Augsburg endured a middling season, ending the campaign in 13th, but they would have finished lower were in not for the performances of Rafal Gikiewicz between the sticks. The 33-year-old was the busiest goalkeeper in the division, making more saves (127) than any other shotstopper, while his save success rate (71.3%) was the second best in the Bundesliga to yield a WhoScored rating of 6.83.
Christopher Trimmel (Union Berlin) - 7.03
Union Berlin enjoyed another solid campaign following their 2019/20 promotion as the experienced Christopher Trimmel makes the best XI at right-back. Trimmel chipped in with an impressive nine assists for the German outfit, while 59 key passes was the eighth best return in the division. In all, the 34-year-old did enough to garner a WhoScored rating of 7.03.
Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund) - 7.26
The first of three Borussia Dortmund representatives to make the team of the season, Mats Hummels was as solid at repelling danger with his feet as he was in the air. The German centre-back excelled at playing the ball from the back as he ranked second for accurate passes (2313) to help yield a WhoScored rating of 7.26.
Willi Orban (RB Leipzig) - 7.17
Partnering Hummels at the heart of the defence is RB Leipzig's Willi Orban. Only Hummels won more aerial duels than Orban (112) of defenders in Germany's top tier this term. In addition, the Hungarian netted four times to contribute towards his inclusion in the best XI with a WhoScored rating of 7.17.
Filip Kostic (Eintracht Frankfurt) - 7.29
Rounding off the defence in Eintracht Frankfurt's Filip Kostic, who did well to secure a WhoScored rating of 7.29 this season. 14 assists was a superb return for the Serb, that ranking second in Germany's top tier, while 89 key passes was also the second best. Kostic also ranked top for clear-cut chances created (22) and is a worthy addition to the team of 2020/21.
Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund) - 7.54
For the third season running, Jadon Sancho registered double figures for assists as he ended the campaign with 11 to his name. Those came from 67 key passes, the fifth best return in the Bundesliga, while 14 big chances created ranked third in the division. With an additional eight league goals to his name, Sancho did enough to nail down his spot in the best XI with a WhoScored rating of 7.54.
Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich) - 7.57
The first Bayern Munich representative is midfield maestro Joshua Kimmich. The 26-year-old once again shone in the middle of the park for the champions, registering double figures for assists (10) for the third time in the last four league seasons. 71 passes per game was better than any other midfielder in the league as Kimmich ended the season with a WhoScored rating of 7.57.
Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich) - 7.51
Joining Kimmich in the middle of the park is Bayern teammate Thomas Muller. The 31-year-old was the only player to register double figures for both goals (11) and assists (18) in the Bundesliga this season, the latter more than any other player. Muller also ranked first for key passes (93) and second for clear-cut chances created (15) as he averaged a fine WhoScored rating of 7.51 in 2020/21.
Matheus Cunha (Hertha Berlin) - 7.33
Rounding off the midfield is Hertha Berlin's Matheus Cunha. While the capital side endured a campaign to forget, finishing just two points clear of the relegation playoff spot, Brazilian Cunha was superb in the final third, having had a direct hand in 11 of their 41 goals, scoring seven. 82 successful dribbles was second only to Amine Harit (90) in the Bundesliga this season and his good form not only yielded a WhoScored rating of 7.33, but has also seen his stock soar.
Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich) - 8.07
A deserving winner of the Bundesliga player of the season award with a WhoScored rating of 8.07, Robert Lewandowski broke Gerd Muller's record goal-haul in a single Bundesliga campaign, netting 41 times for Bayern in 2020/21. Those 41 goals came from 137 shots, that more than any other player, and he should have, would you believe, scored more having struck the woodwork at least four more times (8) than any other player. The Pole was also named the WhoScored man of the match in 11 of his 29 outings in a memorable campaign.
Erling Haaland (Borussia Dortmund) - 7.63
Joining Lewandowski on the frontline is Borussia Dortmund hitman Erling Haaland. The Norwegian star netted 27 times for Dortmund, that ranking third in the scoring charts, and laid on an additional six assists for his teammates. Haaland's 22 big chances scored ranked second in the division, while his WhoScored rating of 7.63 was also the second best in Germany's top tier.
Andre Silva (7.51) deserves an honourable mention, too, with his rating the fifth best in the league having netted 28 times for Eintracht Frankfurt. The Portuguese striker is unfortunate not to make the XI on the back of a superb campaign, which has seen interest in his services skyrocket.
