Newcastle vs Fulham - Full match preview
Saturday, 3pm KO
Newcastle have struggled for consistency this season but they have managed to pick up good results here and there. Rafa Benitez’s side head into the weekend four points clear of the bottom three and will hope to extend that gap ahead of Christmas.
Claudio Ranieri’s appointment has not brought about the changes Fulham would have hoped. The former Leicester and Chelsea manager has only managed one win in his opening five Premier League games and the Cottagers remain rock bottom and three points adrift of safety.
Fulham have only picked up one point away from home this season and only Cardiff (5) have scored fewer away league goals than Ranieri’s side (6) in England’s top-flight. Newcastle’s home form isn’t much better but Benitez certainly have the better form heading into this weekend’s action.
West Ham vs Watford - Full match preview
Saturday, 3pm KO
West Ham are one of the form teams in the Premier League following a run of four straight victories. After a difficult start to the season, Manuel Pellegrini’s side have finally found their feet. In fact, only three sides have picked up more Premier League points over their last six matches than West Ham (13).
Watford are the opposite. After a stunning start to the campaign, the Hornets have really struggled of late. They did end a winless run of six league matches last weekend with a 3-2 win at home to Cardiff but they have only won two away league matches all season.
West Ham are only above Watford in the league on goal difference but the form of both teams couldn’t be more different. The Hammers are favourites and on their best run of Premier League form since early 2014. They haven’t won five league games in a row since 2006 but are well placed to do that this weekend.
Huddersfield vs Southampton - Full match preview
Saturday, 3pm KO
Huddersfield have lost four Premier League matches in a row and have hit their worst form at the wrong time. With the fixtures thick and fast over the festive period, the Terriers could be in an even worse position in the New Year. They are already two points adrift of safety and need to improve their form quickly to give themselves a good chance of beating the drop.
Southampton, meanwhile, appear to have changed manager at the right time. Ralph Hasenhuttl lost his first game in charge of the club but ended Arsenal’s unbeaten run in his second, as Southampton recorded a shock 3-2 victory over the Gunners. Southampton are above the bottom three on goal difference and will hope to further distances themselves against relegation rivals Huddersfield.
Cardiff vs Manchester United - Full match preview
Saturday, 5:30pm KO
Manchester United sacked Jose Mourinho on Tuesday and appointed club icon Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on a deal until the end of the season. Solskjaer’s first game in charge of United will, remarkably, be against the only other club he has managed in England, Cardiff.
Solskjaer has said all of the right things since being appointed United manager and now needs to back those things up on the pitch with the players. United haven’t lost three games in a row in all competitions since September 2016 but are favourites on Saturday even though they are going through an extremely rough patch.
Cardiff have perfectly alternated between wins and losses in their last seven Premier League matches, which if they are to continue that trend this weekend, means they will beat Manchester United. However, it would be a huge shock if they beat United in Solskjaer’s first game in charge of the Red Devils.
Aston Villa vs Leeds - Full match preview
Sunday, 1:30pm KO
The final Championship match before Christmas is a cracker, contested by promotion rivals Aston Villa and Leeds. Villa are starting to find their feet under new manager Dean Smith, while Leeds have been a real force all season under Marcelo Bielsa. Leeds may have lost top spot by the time they face Villa on Sunday depending on the outcome of Norwich’s trip to Blackburn. Leeds have won their last five league games and have the best away form in the division (21 points). However, they have failed to get the better of Villa in their last three meetings.
Villa, meanwhile, have been in entertaining games all season. Matches involving Villa have seen more goals (77) than any other team in the Championship. Smith’s side have scored at least two goals in their last seven league matches but have also conceded at least two goals in their last three home league games. Villa are unbeaten in their last seven Championship matches and will hope to preserve that record against one of the promotion favourites this season.
Everton vs Tottenham - Full match preview
Sunday. 4pm KO
The final Premier League fixture before Christmas will be contested between Everton and Tottenham. Tottenham are the best of the rest behind league leaders Liverpool and Manchester City and have quietly gone about their business this season without really being at their very best.
Everton, meanwhile, have enjoyed a good start to Marco Silva’s time at the club and the Portuguese has done well to put smiles back on the supporters’ faces. Everton could be as low as 13th by the time they host Tottenham but they have hit a bit of a rough patch of late, only managing one win in their last six in the league.
Tottenham won both Premier League fixtures against Everton last season by a combined scoreline of 7-0 but can expect a tougher test this time around. Nevertheless, Mauricio Pochettino’s side are unbeaten in their last six league games against the Toffees and should be confident of overcoming them here. The only doubt about Tottenham’s capabilities this weekend is whether their players will be distracted by rumours linking their manager with the Manchester United hot seat in the summer.
