Madrid duo dominate Champions League Team of the Week

 



Madrid giants Real and Atletico dominate the Champions League team of the week with three players each following respective wins over Braga and Celtic. Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund, FC Porto, Manchester City, Real Sociedad and AC Milan are also represented. 

 

Andriy Lunin (Real Madrid) - 8.45 

 

The first of three Real Madrid players to make the cut, Los Blancos may have cruised to a 3-0 win over Portuguese side Braga, but they needed Andriy Lunin to put in a solid shift between the sticks to secure all the spoils. The 24-year-old made four saves on home turf, including a first half penalty stop to keep the scores level, to contribute towards a WhoScored rating of 8.45. 

 

Jose Gimenez (Atletico Madrid) - 8.28 

 

Just like their cross-town rivals, Atletico Madrid also have three players in the Champions League team of the week after thrashing Celtic 6-0. Jose Gimenez put in a solid shift at the heart of the Atleti defence prior to his 77th-minute withdrawal as noted by a WhoScored rating of 8.28. Not only did the Uruguyan register the assist for Alvaro Morata's first and his side's second, the centre-back also won two aerial duels, and made three clearances and one interception. 

 

Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund) - 8.08 

 

Featuring alongside Gimenez at the back is Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels. Dortmund's 2-0 win over Newcastle means they top the Group of Death with two games to go as Hummels put in an excellent showing for the German side, making eight tackles against the Magpies, a record in a Champions League match this season. 

 

Pepe (FC Porto) - 7.91 

 

Pepe became the oldest scorer in Champions League history in midweek as he netted late on in FC Porto's 2-0 win over Royal Antwerp. The 40-year-old showed that age is but a number as two aerial duels won, two clearances and one interception helped to garner a WhoScored rating of 7.91. 

 

Phil Foden (Manchester City) - 7.96 

 

Phil Foden netted for the third game running in Manchester City's comfortable 3-0 win over Young Boys to secure his spot in the XI. The 23-year-old hit the back of the net with one of six shots at the Etihad Stadium and overall; he was a menace for the Swiss outfit's defence as he completed three dribbles and made one key pass on his way to a WhoScored rating of 7.96.

Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid) - 9.49 

 

Atletico Madrid's second representative, Antoine Griezmann scored two of their six goals in the comfortable win over Celtic, bagging a brace with two of six efforts on goal. Griezmann was unfortunate not to add an assist having made four key passes, while an additional two tackles saw the Frenchman return a WhoScored rating of 9.49. 

 

Mikel Merino (Real Sociedad) - 8.99 

 

Real Sociedad booked their place in the next round of the Champions League in style as they eased past Portuguese powerhouse Benfica 3-1 at the Anoeta. Mikel Merino put in a player of the match performance as one goal and one assist contributed towards the Spaniard's WhoScored rating of 8.99. 

 

Rafael Leao (AC Milan) - 8.44 

 

AC Milan finally got off the mark in the Champions League as they beat PSG 2-1 on home turf in midweek. Rafael Leao was the star player for the Serie A side with a WhoScored rating of 8.44 as the Portugal international struck with one of three shots in Italy. Leao also completed five dribbles and made two key passes in a fine showing from the 24-year-old. 

 

Rodrygo (Real Madrid) - 9.01 

 

It's an all-Madrid frontline in the Champions League team of the week with Rodrygo starring in the XI following a superb showing against Braga. The Brazilian was directly involved in two of Real Madrid's three goals in midweek, following up his assist for Brahim Diaz's opener with a goal of his own on the hour mark. 

 

Alvaro Morata (Atletico Madrid) - 9.65 

 

With a WhoScored rating of 9.65, Atletico Madrid's Alvaro Morata is the Champions League player of the week. The 31-year-old was exceptional against Celtic as he netted twice from two of three shots and provided the assist for Samuel Lino's goal midway through the second half from one of two key passes. Morata also won one aerial duel and made one tackle to land the accolade. 

 

Vinicius Junior (Real Madrid) - 9.07 

 

Rounding off the XI is Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior. Like teammate and compatriot Rodrygo, VInicius was also directly involved in two goals in midweek, bagging Real Madrid's second in the 58th-minute and following that up with the assist for Rodrygo three minutes later. Those came from respective returns of seven key passes and two shots as the 23-year-old returned a WhoScored rating of 9.07.
