All change in Premier League form rankings as Manchester United trio make up top 10
It’s all change in the Premier League form rankings, with just three of last week’s top ten keeping their place on the leaderboard. There’s a new leader as a result, though the player in question should come as no great surprise.
10) Nemanja Matic (up 8) - 7.35
The fact that Jose Mourinho’s trusted midfield lieutenant was one of the biggest disappointments in the first half of the season proves just how bad things had got at United, and the Serbian has looked back to his best of late. Matic appears fitter, which is crucial to his role of breaking up play in the middle ground and he secured a sixth consecutive rating in excess of seven under Solskjaer having done so in just three of 14 league appearances beforehand.
9) Roberto Firmino (up 2) - 7.40
The Brazilian has very much overcome a troubling run of form in front of goal, scoring for the fifth time in his last four league starts in the 4-3 win over Palace. Luck was on his side, with a deflection taking the ball past Julian Speroni, but the 27-year-old is picking up better goalscoring positions of late, having scored just four goals in his first 19 league outings.
8) Troy Deeney (up 4) - 7.46
Another player that has rediscovered some form in the final third, Deeney may have been unable to break the deadlock against Burnley but his link up play was very good. The striker won eight aerial duels and created four chances for his teammates and is up four places this week.
7) Jan Bednarek (up 48) - 7.46
Poland international Bednarek couldn’t get a look in under Mark Hughes this season but Ralph Hasenhuttl has seen something in the 22-year-old that his former boss didn’t. The new man has certainly been rewarded for his faith in the centre-back, who earned a second successive man of the match award in victory over Everton, ranking first in the entire league for aerial duels won (14) and interceptions (seven) this weekend, as well as second for clearances (10).
6) Leroy Sane (up 17) - 7.47
With a goal and assist in City’s routine win over Huddersfield, Sane took his respective tallies to eight and nine in the league this season, with a direct hand in 17 goals in just 15 starts. He’s up 17 places into sixth this week as a result, which is incidentally where he ranks overall this season too.
5) Raheem Sterling (up 10) - 7.74
After something of a lull over the Christmas period Raheem Sterling’s form is building nicely again, with his WhoScored.com rating increasing game-by-game over the six performances assessed. The 8.47 he secured at the weekend was his best in the league since earning a perfect ten against Southampton in November having scored with his only shot at goal and completed five dribbles.
4) Ricardo Pereira (down 2) - 7.92
Down two places despite marginal increase in his weighted form rating, Pereira started in a third different position in as many matches to prove his versatility for the Foxes against Wolves on Saturday. Playing from an advanced position on the right, the Portuguese still chipped in with two tackles and interceptions apiece, while attempting three shots, creating four chances and completing four dribbles from an attacking perspective.
3) Marcus Rashford (up 2) - 7.96
Finding the net for the fourth league game running and fifth in six under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Rashford’s superb form shows no sign of letting up. His rating in the 2-1 win over Brighton (8.40) was his strongest yet under the Norwegian, with his sumptuous top corner finish from an astute angle coming from one of six shots in total, whilst completing three dribbles and completing 86.7 per cent of his passes.
2) Mohamed Salah (up 1) - 8.06
With a match-winning brace against Palace bringing his Premier League career haul to 50, the goal that brought up the landmark couldn’t have been any easier. That said, the Egyptian has now scored six goals in his last six league appearances, registering a further three assists in that time, meaning he has now had a direct hand in three more goals than any other player in the league (23).
1) Paul Pogba (NQ) - 8.31
Finally qualifying for consideration having started all six league matches under Solskjaer, having been left out of the three previous under Mourinho, Pogba was on the scoresheet again on Saturday. His goal may have come from the spot but it was a penalty he won himself courtesy of an outstanding touch past Gaetan Bong, and while it was probably his quietest performance under the new regime, the Frenchman’s overall form has been sensational. With five goals and four assists in his last six appearances, Pogba has had a direct hand in over half of the goals United have scored in that time (17).
