With gameweek four of the 2020/21 Champions League group stage done and dusted it is time to take stock of the midweek action and lavish praise on the top performing players.

 

Here we run through the best rated XI from matchday four in the Champions League, with several hot prospects making the team.

 

Goalkeeper: Jose Sa (Olympiacos) - 8.37 rating

 

Olympaicos only lost 1-0 to Manchester City on Wednesday night but have goalkeeper Jose Sa to thank for keeping the scoreline respectable. Sa made 10 saves against Pep Guardiola's side, the joint-second most in a Champions League game this season.

 

Right-back: Juan Cuadrado (Juventus) - 8.32 rating

 

Juventus were forced to work harder than expected against minnows Ferencvaros, as the Old Lady battled from 1-0 down to win 2-1 thanks to a brace of assists from right-back Juan Cuadrado. He now has four assists in the Champions League this season, as many as the last three campaigns combined.

 

Centre-back: Nico Elvedi (Gladbach) - 8.75 rating

 

Gladbach took a major step towards qualifiaction to the knockout stage with a blistering 4-0 win over Shakhtar on Tuesday night. Nico Elvedi was one of two defenders on the scoresheet for the Bundesliga outfit, with the 24-year-old netting his first ever European goal. Elvedi also completed 93 per cent of his attempted passes, made five tackles and interceptions combined and six clearances.

 

Centre-back: Murilo Cerqueira (Lokomotiv Moscow) - 8.23 rating

 

Lokomotiv Moscow held Atletico Madrid to a 0-0 draw away from home on Wednesday night, with Brazilian centre-back Murilo Cerqueira picking up the WhoScored Man of the Match award. The 24-year-old was in the right place at the right time to help the Russian outfit keep an unlikely clean sheet with 10 clearances. He also completed three tackles and interceptions combined and even registered created a goalscoring chance for his side.

 

Left-back: Oscar Wendt (Gladbach) - 8.80 rating

 

Oscar Wendt was the second Gladbach defender on the scoresheet in their thumping of Shakhtar, with the 35-year-old also netting the first European goal of his career. The Gladbach left-back was actually making his first appearance of the season in the Champions League this season and vindicated his selection. As well as scoring, Wendt chipped in with six tackles and interceptions combined to help Gladbach keep a clean sheet.

 

Right wing: Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund) - 9.11 rating

 

Jadon Sancho has endured a frustrating start to the season after a failed move to Manchester United but rediscovered his best form in Borussia Dortmund's routine win over Club Brugge on Tuesday. Sancho scored a sublime free-kick and also set-up Erling Haaland for one of his two goals to claim the WhoScored Player of the Week award in the Champions League. Sancho registered four key passes in total and completed two dribbles.

Central midfield: Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United) - 8.84 rating

 

Bruno Fernandes turned in another inspirational display in Manchester United's 4-1 win over Istanbul Basaksehir on Tuesday night. Fernandes scored a thumping long range effort to open the scoring before capitalising on poor goalkeeping for his second. The Portugal international incredibly turned down the opportunity for his hat-trick, instead handing Marcus Rashford the ball after United were awarded a spot-kick. Fernandes also registered three key passes before coming off on the hour mark for a deserved rest.

 

Central midfield: Ryan Gravenberch (Ajax) - 8.17 rating

 

Ryan Gravenberch is widely regarded as the next hot prospect coming through at Ajax and the 18-year-old celebrated his first goal in the Champions League on his fourth appearance in the competition. The teenage midfielder scored in Ajax's 3-1 win over FC Midtjylland on Wednesday and also completed three dribbles.

 

Left wing: Phil Foden (Manchester City) - 8.47 rating

 

Manchester City's forwards endured another frustrating night in midweek but booked their name in the knockout phase of the Champions League for the eighth straight season nonetheless. Phil Foden eventually made the breakthrough against Olympiacos, notching his first goal in the competition this season. The 20-year-old had six attempts in total; registered four key passes and completed as many dribbles.

 

Striker: Martin Braithwaite (Barcelona) - 8.94 rating

 

Martin Braithwaite has barely got a kick for Barcelona since completing a controversial move to the Spanish giants at the start of the year but turned in his best display for the club in their midweek rout of Dynamo Kyiv. Braithwaite played a direct hand in three of the four goals Barcelona scored, netting a brace and providing one assist.

 

Striker: Ciro Immobile (Lazio) - 8.82 rating

 

Lazio took a major step towards qualification for the next round of the competition with a 3-1 win over Russian side Zenit on Tuesday night, with star striker Ciro Immobile, who is the third top rated player in the Champions League, netting a brace. Immobile has now scored in five straight matches for Lazio.
