Rising Arsenal star Martinelli secures spot in European team of the week

 

There are three Premier League players in the European team of the week as Joao Cancelo, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Martinelli, of Manchester City and Arsenal respectively, all make the cut. La Liga pair Villarreal and Valencia are also represented in attack, while European giants Inter and Bayern Munich also have players feature in the XI. 

 

Jeremias Ledesma (Cadiz) - 8.23 

 

Jeremias Ledesma was in inspiring form as Cadiz held Real Madrid to a 0-0 draw at the Bernabeu on Sunday night. The Argentine made nine saves - no goalkeeper has made more in a La Liga match this season - to feature with a WhoScored rating of 8.23. 

 

Joao Cancelo (Manchester City) - 8.96 

 

The first of two Manchester City players in the side, Joao Cancelo was in superb form at St. James' Park in their 4-0 win. He provided the assist for Ruben Dias' opener and then bagged City's second with a thundering effort midway through the first half. Those came from respective returns of one key pass and three shots as Cancelo earned a WhoScored rating of 8.96. 

 

Dayot Upamecano (Bayern Munich) - 8.89 

 

Bayern Munich ended the Hinrunde with a 4-0 win over Wolfburg, with Dayot Upamecano earning the WhoScored man of the match award in the victory with a rating of 8.89. The Frenchman scored Bayern's second in the victory and made five tackles, two interceptions and one clearance to feature at the back. 

 

Amir Rrahmani (Napoli) - 8.14 

 

Napoli claimed a huge win at AC Milan on Sunday night, with Amir Rrahmani putting in a superb shift at the back. The 27-year-old made eight clearances and three interceptions to earn a clean sheet victory for Napoli and secure Rrahmani a spot in the European team of the week with a WhoScored rating of 8.14. 

 

Oleksandr Zinchenko (Manchester City) - 8.10 

 

Oleksandr Zinchenko provided the assist for Riyad Mahrez's goal midway through the second half in Manchester City's 4-0 win at Newcastle on Sunday, that coming from his only key pass of the day. The Ukrainian was solid where needed, making three tackles and three interceptions, to round off the defence with a WhoScored rating of 8.10. 

 

Serge Gnabry (Bayern Munich) - 8.36 

 

The second Bayern Munich player in the European team of the week, Serge Gnabry provided his third assist of the season in the 4-0 victory over Wolfsburg, teeing up Leroy Sane on the hour mark. Three key passes and four successful dribbles helped Gnabry to a WhoScored rating of 8.36 to nail down the right wing spot in the side.

Hakan Calhanoglu (Inter) - 9.68 

 

Hakan Calhanoglu has been in inspiring form of late, and played a central role in Inter's 5-0 win at Salernitana on Friday night. A return of 10 key passes is a record in a Serie A match this season, those chances translating to assists for Ivan Perisic and Alexis Sanchez either side of half time. That helped Calhanoglu to a WhoScored rating of 9.68. 

 

Jean-Victor Makengo (Udinese) - 8.63 

 

It's an all-Serie A midfield partnership in the European team of the week with Jean-Victor Makengo joining Calhanoglu in the middle of the park. Makengo had a direct hand in two of Udinese's four goals at Cagliari on Saturday, following up his early goal with the assist for Gerard Deulofeu's second with 20 minutes to play to feature with a WhoScored rating of 8.63. 

 

Gabriel Martinelli (Arsenal) - 9.11 

 

The sole Arsenal representative from their 4-1 win at Leeds is young Brazilian Gabriel Martinelli. The 20-year-old scored a first half brace at Elland Road, netting with his only two shots in the victory, and was unfortunate not to add an assist having created five goalscoring chances to yield a WhoScored rating of 9.11. 

 

Gerard Moreno (Villarreal) - 10.0 

 

With a perfect WhoScored 10 rating, Gerard Moreno is the European player of the week. Moreno had a direct hand in all three goals in Villarreal's 3-1 win at Real Sociedad, scoring either side of half time before turning provider for Samuel Chukwueze in injury time to confirm the result. Goncalo Guedes (Valencia) - 9.52 

 

Valencia mounted an impressive comeback to beat rivals Levante on Monday night, earning all three points in an entertaining 4-3 win. Goncalo Guedes had a direct hand in three of the four goals at the Ciutat de Valencia, netting either side of half time, including the decisive winner five minutes from time, and provided the assist for Carlos Soler's second from respective returns of five shots and one key pass to partner Moreno with a WhoScored rating of 9.52.
