Ranked: Raya, Maignan and 7 other goalkeepers linked with Tottenham
This season has been one to forget for Tottenham. A pre-season that promised so much has culminated in a disappointing campaign for the north London side, and they face the real prospect of no European football next season. This is a team without a manager, a director of football and in need of a refresh, with a number of problem areas in need of addressing.
Perhaps that most important is between the sticks, with a new goalkeeper a priority for Spurs this summer. Hugo Lloris looks to have played his final game for the club, that coming in the 6-1 drubbing at Newcastle last month, where he was hauled off at half time owing to injury.
With Spurs linked with a number of goalkeepers in the off-season, we take a look at nine who are supposedly on the club's radar and rank them by their WhoScored rating in their respective league this season to determine who would be best suited as the club's number one target. For context, Hugo Lloris has returned a WhoScored rating of 6.59 in the 2022/23 Premier League campaign, which would rank sixth in this rundown.
9. Robert Sanchez (Brighton) - 6.42 rating
Robert Sanchez hasn't been at his best for Brighton this season, and lost his place between the sticks to Jason Steele back in March, with Seagulls boss Roberto De Zerbi preferring the latter's distribution. At 32 years of age, Steele's goalkeeping career is still in its infancy, and as such; Brighton may be prepared to cash in on the Spaniard. By his usual standards, Sanchez has endured a sub-par campaign, as noted by a WhoScored rating of 6.42, with his save success rate of 64% actually lower than Danny Ward (65%), who plies his trade for relegation threatened Leicester. Given Steele's impact having made his Premier League debut earlier this year, Brighton may be willing to do business for Sanchez's sale this summer.
8. Illan Meslier (Leeds) - 6.42 rating
Should Leeds succumb to relegation, then there will be a fair few of their first team players up for grabs this summer, with Illan Meslier perhaps the main target for a number of Premier League teams in the need for a new goalkeeper. Following Leeds' 2020 promotion, Meslier has conceded more league goals (198) than any other goalkeeper, but the Whites' defensive shortcomings means the 23-year-old has been far busier than other shotstopper in the division having made more saves (377) than any other player in his position. Given his age, there is more to come from the Frenchman, and with a better defence ahead of him, Meslier should really start to develop accordingly.
7. Giorgi Mamardashvili (Valencia) - 6.53 rating
Valencia's run of three wins from their last five games means Los Che can breathe a little easier in their bid to beat the drop. They are still just three points clear of relegation with four games to play, and have a tough run in, so teams interested in goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili will be keeping a close eye on Valencia's end to the campaign. Despite the Spanish side's league position, they have conceded just 41 goals, fewer than Girona and Sevilla, two teams above Ruben Baraja's side in the table, and much of that is due to Mamardashvili, who ranks fifth for saves (93) and boasts a respectable save success rate of 68.9%.
6. Dean Henderson (Nottingham Forest, on loan from Manchester United) - 6.57 rating
Dean Henderson is at a crossroads in his career. He's clearly too good to be rotting away on the Manchester United bench, but with David De Gea tipped to sign a new deal at Old Trafford, the 26-year-old won't be first choice anytime soon. Injuries have also restricted Henderson to just 18 appearances for Nottingham Forest this season, but with 20 of their 34 points earned with the on-loan shotstopper featuring, his impact is evident. A return of three saves per 90 is level with current Forest number one Keylor Navas, and while this season is ending on a sour note for Henderson, he'll come back stronger next year as a first choice for a new team.
5. Mike Maignan (AC Milan) - 6.64 rating
Like Henderson, injuries have limited Mike Maignan to just 19 league appearances for AC Milan this season, but now fully fit, the Frenchman has been a shining light in a sub-par Rossoneri campaign. AC Milan concede fewer goals per game with Maignan between the sticks, dropping from 1.38 to one when he features from the outset, though it remains to be seen if the Italian side will entertain offers for their prized shotstopper. Tottenham should have made their move on the back of Lille's title triumph when it became clear he'd leave Les Dogues. The consensus now is that Maignan will replace Hugo Lloris for country, yet not for club.
4. Jan Oblak (Atletico Madrid) - 6.67 rating
Jan Oblak penned a new deal with Atletico Madrid last summer, which ties him down the club until 2028. Tottenham were linked with a move for the 30-year-old at the turn of the year, though whether they'll seek to sign the Slovenian this summer remains to be seen. Despite dropping off radars in recent months, Oblak has once again impressed for Atletico as noted by a modest WhoScored rating of 6.67. Only Marc-Andre ter Stegen (80.9%) has a better save success rate than the Los Colchoneros number one (75.3%) in La Liga this season, while only two goalkeepers have kept more clean sheets than Oblak (11) in Spain's top tier. It would take a huge bid to convince Atleti to sell their first choice shotstopper in the off season.
3. Jordan Pickford (Everton) - 6.69 rating
Another relegation threatened goalkeeper linked with a move to Tottenham, Jordan Pickford has again been a key reason why Everton are still in a position to beat the drop. The England international ranks third for the most saves (119) in the Premier League this season, and has kept a respectable seven clean sheets in England's top tier, the same as Hugo Lloris. The 29-year-old did sign a new four-and-a-half year deal in February, but if the Toffees do drop into the Championship, he's one who may not follow suit. Spurs do have a long-standing interest in Pickford, and Everton's potential relegation could see him up sticks to London.
2. Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa) - 6.87 rating
Could Tottenham replace one World Cup winner with another? Emiliano Martinez was vital in Argentina's triumph in Qatar in November, and his antics between the sticks for club and country have certainly caught the eye. The 30-year-old, like every Aston Villa player, has seen his performances improve since Unai Emery took charge in November, and in that time, only two goalkeepers have kept more clean sheets than the Argentine (8) to help boost his reputation. Villa would command a hefty fee for Martinez, but if Spurs are serious about returning to the Champions League then they'll need to spend big.
1. David Raya (Brentford) - 6.95 rating
The best rated goalkeeper target for Tottenham, David Raya will likely leave this summer with Brentford closing in on his replacement in the form of Freiburg's Mark Flekken. The Bees will demand a hefty fee for the Spaniard, with rumours suggesting they won't entertain any bid under £40m, which shouldn't come as a surprise. The 27-year-old ranks top for saves (146) and accurate long balls (387) in the Premier League this season, while a 75.3% save success rate is also the best in England's top tier. Yet like with Martinez, Spurs do need to splash the cash to bring in the best, and Raya would certainly improve a problem position for the north London side.
