Now the 2018 World Cup is underway, we are going to highlight five players you should consider for your Football INDEX portfolios 24 hours before their matches. Here are our four tips for Tuesdays’s group games:
1. MILE JEDINAK (AUSTRALIA VS PERU)
Australia still have a slim chance of progressing through to the knockout stage of the 2018 World Cup but must beat Peru on Tuesday, hope France beat Denmark and top the Danes’ on goal difference.
Bert van Marwijk’s side have one point after two matches and both of the goals they have scored have come from the penalty spot, with Mile Jedinak converting both times.
The Aston Villa midfielder could well prove key again on Tuesday, particularly as the chances of a penalty being awarded are astronomically high this summer.
There have already been more penalties awarded at the 2018 World Cup than there was four years ago in Brazil and we haven’t even started the last round of group games!
Jedinak is not only a key player for Australia but he could be a wanted man this summer, as Aston Villa are in financial turmoil and need to raise in the region of £40m to meet Financial Fair Play regulations.
The 33-year-old will not command much of a transfer fee but he will certainly reduce their wage bill. His Football INDEX share price is only £0.45 and he should be considered for your portfolios.
2. STEVEN N’ZONZI (FRANCE VS DENMARK)
Despite the fact France have not yet qualified for the knockout stages as group winners, Les Bleus head coach Didier Deschamps is set to make wholesale changes for Tuesday’s meeting with Denmark.
France have struggled to find the right balance in attack in their opening two matches and Deschamps is set to drop Paul Pogba to the bench in favour of Steven N’Zonzi against the Danes.
The Sevilla midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal this summer, with Unai Emery keen on reuniting with the midfielder at the Emirates. A solid showing against Denmark will only enhance his reputation, but give Deschamps something to really think about in the knockout phase.
His Football INDEX share price is £1.20 and is worth considering for your portfolios.
3. EVER BANEGA (ARGENTINA VS NIGERIA)
Argentina are also set to make sweeping changes to their starting XI for their final group game of the 2018 World Cup. Unlike France, who have already qualified, Argentina’s campaign has been a disaster and they face a real mountain to climb if they are to even get out the group.
The South American side have one point from their opening two matches and will need a comprehensive win over Nigeria and Croatia to beat Iceland in the group’s other match to have a chance of finishing second.
Reports have emerged suggesting Jorge Sampaoli has lost the dressing room and a whole new team could be picked on Tuesday.
Argentina struggled to get Lionel Messi involved in their first two matches, which makes it even stranger that Ever Banega, who is arguably their most creative central midfielder, has been limited to just 36 minutes of action this summer.
Like N’Zonzi, the Sevilla midfielder has been linked with a move to Arsenal and he has been tipped to get a rare start on Wednesday. His Football Index share price is £2.11 and should be considered for your portfolios.
4. MATEO KOVACIC (CROATIA VS ICELAND)
It’s bad news for Argentina, as Croatia will reportedly field a second string XI against Iceland after securing qualification to the knockout phase of the competition. Mateo Kovacic has already conceded he may have to leave Real Madrid this summer and he is expected to get his first start of the 2018 World Cup on Wednesday.
The 24t-year-old will not be short of suitors if he is free to leave Madrid and he will hope to use Wednesday’s game against Iceland as a shop window for potential suitors.
With Ivan Rakitic and Luka Modric ahead in the pecking order, It’s unlikely Kovacic will be able to usurp them for a starting berth in the round of 16, but he should still be considered for your portfolios.
His Football INDEX share price is £1.84 but will only increase this summer as a move away from Madrid beckons.
