Season Review: Wenger's final year at Arsenal is one to forget

Arsene Wenger was not able to conclude his 22-year run as Arsenal manager on a high. Instead of basking in glory, the 2017/18 campaign goes down as his worst. The Gunners finished the season with their lowest points total under the Frenchman, suffering more defeats than ever before.

Arsenal did at least manage to end the season with an away league win; their first points on the road in 2018, ending a remarkable seven-game losing streak on their travels in the Premier League.

The process of finding Wenger's successor is already underway and Arsenal hope to appoint a new manager before the 2018 World Cup starts in just under a month.

What from this season can the next Arsenal manager draw inspiration from and what changes need to be improved over the summer?

SUCCESS - PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG

A whirlwind start to the year saw, Arsenal trade Alexis Sanchez for Henrikh Mkhitaryan and reunite the Armenia international with former Borussia Dortmund team-mate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Aubameyang has settled into life at Arsenal with ease since the Gunners shelled out a club-record fee to prise him away from Dortmund, while Wenger was left to rue a UEFA ruling that ensured Aubameyang was unable to participate in their Europa League run to the last four.

Instead, the 28-year-old benefitted from ample rest to become the fastest player in Arsenal history to net 10 goals in the Premier League, doing so in 13 matches. With more to come from the likes of Mkhitaryan and Alexandre Lacazette, the future of Arsenal's attack looks healthy.

FLOP - PETR CECH

One of the biggest issues facing the next Arsenal manager is the future of Petr Cech. Former Chelsea captain John Terry claimed the 35-year-old would be worth 12 to 15 points a season when he joined Arsenal three years ago but that simply has not been the case.

Cech will go down as one of the Premier League's greatest goalkeepers but he has regressed at a tremendous pace in recent years. In fact, Cech committed the most errors that directly led to an opposition goal in the Premier League this season (6).

Arsenal ended the season closer to the bottom three (30 points) than they did champions Manchester City (37 points) and a defensive overhaul is required if they want to close the gap next term, starting with a new goalkeeper.
