Man City signing and target join Davies in Champions League U21 Team of the Season
After Bayern Munich were crowned Champions league winners on Sunday night we can now start rolling out our end of competition awards, starting with recognition for the best crop of youngsters in the competition.
In order to qualify for the Young Team of the Season, outfielders must have been 21 or under at the beginning of the season and goalkeepers 23 or under. A minimum of six appearances must also have been made.
It's fair to say this XI has a bright future...
Goalkeeper: Andre Onana (Ajax) - 7.18 rating
Ajax underperformed in the Champions League this season and as a result it put a lot of pressure on sought-after goalkeeper Andre Onana. The 24-year-old rose to the occasion, averaging 4.2 saves per game, forced into action every 21.6 minutes of playing time. Of goalkeepers that made at least six appearances in the Champions League this season, only three others made a save more frequently than Onana.
Right-back: Achraf Hakimi (Borussia Dortmund) - 7.43 rating
Achraf Hakimi finished the 2019/20 Champions League campaign with only one fewer goal (4) than he managed in 33 appearances in the Bundesliga (5). Hakimi impressively scored in half of his Champions League appearances. The 21-year-old, now of Inter, completed 20 of his 23 attempted tackles, while also averaging 2.1 successful dribbles pg and 1.3 key passes pg.
Centre-back: Dayot Upamecano (RB Leipzig) - 7.26 rating
Dayot Upamecano's reputation soared during RB Leipzig's unlikely run to the last four of the Champions League and he even claimed a place in our Team of the Season. The 21-year-old, who will not be short of suitors this time next year, finished the competition with a tackle success rate of 92.6%, the best return of any player to have attempted at least 20.
Centre-back: Maximilian Wober (Salzburg) - 7.09 rating
Maximilian Wober started as many games for Salzburg during their entertaining Champions League campaigna as he managed in the league for Sevilla the season before. Pooled with Liverpool, Napoli and Genk in Group E, Wober did well to garner a WhoScored rating in excess of 7.00 in all but one of his appearances. Indeed, only three players (6+ apps) managed more interceptions per game than Wober (3) in the entire competition.
Left-back Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich) - 7.80 rating
Alphonso Davies finished the 2019/20 Champions League campaign as our Young Player of the Season. The 19-year-old was a revelation for Bayern during en route to beating PSG in the final despite playing out of position at left-back. Davies registered three assists in eight appearances and completed more dribbles pg (3.3) than any other defender in the competition. The teenager also returned 2.3 tackles pg and 1.3 interceptions pg. He narrowly missed out on recording the highest ever WhoScored rating by a defender in a single Champions League season since we obtained Opta data 10 years ago.
Right wing: Ferran Torres (Valencia) - 7.47 rating
Ferran Torres excelled during his first full season of Champions League football, managing four goals and assists in six appearances. Not only did the 20-year-old thrive in front of goal, the Spaniard notably also chipped in with 1.3 tackles pg and 2.3 aerial duels won pg. His performances on the European circuit culiminated in a high profile move to Manchester City this summer.
Central midfield: Dani Olmo (RB Leipzig) - 7.24 rating
Dani Olmo completed the group stage of the 2019/20 Champions League with Dinamo Zagreb before sealing a January switch with RB Leipzig. The Spain Under-21 international made eight appearances across both spells and played a direct hand four goals. Olmo scored in Leipzig's shock 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals
Central midfield: Houssem Aouar (Lyon) - 7.56 rating
Lyon have already confirmed they expect Houssem Aouar to move on to bigger and better things this summer after the French side failed to qualify for Europe completely next term despite making it all the way to the last four of this season's Champions League. Aouar caught the eye massively during Lyon's unlikely journey, registering four assists and scoring once in eight games. Moreover, a return of 4.4 dribbles per game was only bettered by Neymar (6.1) and Lionel Messi (7.1).
Left wing: Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund) - 7.28 rating
Jadon Sancho didn't quite manage to replicate his dazzling Bundesliga form in the Champions League but it was still another great phase in his development. The 20-year-old played a direct hand in four goals in eight games (two goals, two assists). Moreover, returns of 3 successful dribbles pg and 2.3 shots pg were better than his averages in the league (2.4 and 1.6, respectively).
Striker: Kylian Mbappe (Paris Saint-Germain) - 7.43 rating
Paris Saint-Germain fell at the final hurdle in their quest to become European champions and things could have panned out differently had they taken their chances in the final. Kylian Mbappe was guilty of missing a good opportunity but in truth was never quite at full fitness having returned from injury earlier than expected. He didn't manage a single goal during the knockout phase of the competition but still played a direct hand in 10 goals in as many appearances in the competition.
Striker: Erling Haaland (Borussia Dortmund) - 7.43 rating
Erling Haaland's maiden campaign in Europe was a spectacular one. The Borussia Dortmund striker scored 10 goals across spells with Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund, only finishing behind Robert Lewandowski (15) in the Golden Boot race. Haaland scored a hat-trick on debut and in each of his first five appearances in the group before joining Dortmund in January. On his Champions League debut for the Bundesliga outfit he scored both goals in a 2-1 win over finalists PSG in their round of 16 first leg tie.
