Leicester star pens new contract

Leicester have announced Jamie Vardy has put pen to paper on a new four-year deal running until 2022.

Vardy had entered the last two years of his previous contract but Leicester have been working on improved terms all summer.

Leicester reluctantly allowed Riyad Mahrez to join Manchester City earlier in the transfer window but wanted to stop a mass exodus of their best players.

Claude Puel’s stood firm to fend off interest from Manchester United in Harry Maguire and have now confirmed news of Vardy’s renewal.

“Everybody knows how I feel about playing for this football club and it’s a great feeling to know that I can look forward to another four years as a Leicester City player,” he told the club’s official website.

“The journey that me, the team and the club have been on in the past few years has been incredible. Going into the new season, it’s an exciting time for Leicester City and I’m delighted to be part of it.”

Vardy has developed into one of the best goalscorers in England in the last few years and played an integral part in Leicester’s shock title-winning campaign back in 2016.

In the last three Premier League campaigns, only Harry Kane (84), Sergio Aguero (65) and Romelu Lukaku (59) have scored more goals than Vardy (57).

Furthermore, of the 74 players to score at least five goals in the Premier League last season, only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (32.3%) had a better conversion rate than Vardy (28.2%).
