Inter line up replacement for Tottenham target Skriniar

Inter are preparing a move for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling should Milan Skriniar leave before the close of the transfer window, reports Football Italia.

Skriniar has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham in recent days with the two teams locked in negotiations over the 25-year-old.

The Slovakian is not expected to feature in Inter's welcome of Fiorentina today as speculation over his future rumbles on.

And Inter have identified Smalling as a potentiel replacement for Skriniar should the centre-back depart for Spurs.

Smalling spent last season on loan with Serie A giants Roma and impressed for the Rome giants, with a WhoScored rating of 7.00 enough to make the team of 2019/20 in Italy.

The 30-year-old has no future at Manchester United and while Roma are prepared to make his move permanent, a deal has not been struck for Smalling between the two teams.

Inter have a solid working relationship with United with Ashley Young, Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez all swapping Manchester for Milan in recent months and they'll look to utilise that once more.

Smalling scored three and provided two assists for Roma last season and after the departure of Diego Godin, Inter remain in the hunt for at least one more centre-back.
