Manchester United plan contract talks with Spaniard

Manchester United hope to conclude a contract extension with Juan Mata before the end of the year, claims The Sun.

Mata has entered the final 12 months of his current United deal and will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign sides in January.

The Spain international is keen to extend his stay at Old Trafford but there are a number of obstacles that first need to be cleared.

Former side Valencia are keen to re-sign Mata seven years after he left to join Chelsea but Jose Mourinho’s side are hoping to secure his best remaining years.

Mata has divided opinion among United fans since signing from Chelsea four years ago but has been a great ambassador for the club.

The 30-year-old kickstarted United’s remarkable victory over Newcastle at the weekend, helping the Red Devils come from 2-0 down to win 3-2 with a perfectly executed free-kick in the second half.

Since the 2013/14 campaign, only Wayne Rooney (68) has scored or assisted more Premier League goals for United than Mata (53).
