Nketiah partners Haaland in Premier League team of the week
This week’s team of the week is dominated by Arsenal and West Ham, who have two players each after their respective wins at the weekend. Players from Brentford, Newcastle, Manchester United, Fulham, Chelsea, Brighton and Manchester City are also represented.
Brentford stretched their unbeaten run in the Premier League to eight games on Sunday with a 0-0 draw with Leeds. David Raya once again put in a fine display to earn the man of the match award for the game, keeping his seventh clean sheet of the season while making five saves, three claims and 21 ball recoveries to earn a WhoScored rating of 8.04.
Kieran Trippier (Newcastle) – 8.58
Newcastle were unable to take advantage of their dominance on Saturday away to Crystal Palace, but were still able to maintain their 15 game unbeaten run with a 0-0 draw. Kieran Trippier earned his eighth man of the match award of the season, which is three more than any other player. Against Palace, he was solid in defence making five successful tackles, one interception and two clearances, while offensively; he made eight key passes, which only Bruno Fernandes (9) can better in a single game. Trippier’s overall WhoScored rating for the match was 8.58.
Nayef Aguerd (West Ham) – 8.21
West Ham recorded their first Premier League win since October 24th with a 2-0 win over strugglers Everton on Saturday. Nayef Aguerd, who had been struggling with injuries when he first made the move to east London, has since established himself as a key player in David Moyes’ team. He had one shot and completed one dribble, while winning four aerial duels and making five tackles. He also made 10 clearances, underlining how involved he was in preventing attacks on his side's goal, returning a WhoScored rating of 8.21 as a result.
Lisandro Martinez (Manchester United) – 8.07
It was a first defeat in 11 competitive games for Manchester United as they left north London empty handed after losing 3-2 to Arsenal. One positive for United however was the performance of Lisandro Martinez, who kept Erik ten Hag's side in the game, winning two aerial duels, making two successful tackles, four interceptions, three of which came in the penalty area, and three clearances. Martinez also scored his first goal since his move to England with his only shot of the game, landing himself a WhoScored rating of 8.07.
Antonee Robinson (Fulham) – 7.58
Fulham fell to back-to-back defeats in the Premier League, losing 1-0 to Tottenham on Monday night. Antonee Robinson however was a standout for Marco Silva's side in what was a tightly contested game. During the match, Robinson maintained a pass success rate of 91.1%, while completing three dribbles, the most by any player in the game, and made four tackles, two clearances and four interceptions, earning a WhoScored rating of 7.58.
Arsenal made another statement in their fight to claim their 14th league title, beating rivals Manchester United 3-2 on Sunday. Bukayo Saka was once again key for his side not only thanks to his goal, which gave the Gunners the lead, but he also registered 13 touches in United’s box, more than any other player in the game, while creating the joint most key passes (4). He also had five shots and completed one dribble, earning him an overall WhoScored rating of 8.20.
Jarrod Bowen (West Ham) – 8.42
Jarrod Bowen scored both goals for the Hammers in their 2-0 win over the Toffees at the weekend, doubling his total for the season. His goals came from two shots on target, which came alongside creating one key pass, completing one dribble and showing great effort to consolidate the win with two tackles and one interception, earning Bowen a WhoScored rating of 8.42.
In what was quite an even contest, a 0-0 draw was probably a fair result between Liverpool and Chelsea in the opening Premier League game of the weekend. Jorginho was a key figure in the centre of the park, making five tackles and four interceptions, while winning one aerial duel too, to secure back-to-back clean sheets for the Blues in the league, and Jorginho a WhoScored rating of 7.68.
Kaoru Mitoma (Brighton) – 8.22
Brighton bagged an 88th minute equaliser on Saturday to draw 2-2 with Leicester after they had initially taken the lead through Karou Mitoma in the 27th minute. Mitoma has been in red hot form recently and he carried that on in this game with his goal coming from his only shot in at the King Power Stadium. The Japanese winger completed three dribbles, which no other player in the game could better, and create two key passes, all the while chipping in with one tackle and two interceptions as well. Mitoma’s WhoScored rating was 8.22 as a result.
Erling Haaland (Manchester City) – 9.05
Manchester City kept the pressure on league leaders Arsenal, winning 3-0 convincingly at home to Wolves. Erling Haaland, as expected, was key in the win, scoring a hat-trick, his fourth of the season, to secure his side the win. He scored his three goals from four shots and won his only aerial duel of the game. This meant his WhoScored rating was 9.05, better than any other player this week.
Eddie Nketiah (Arsenal) – 8.66
Eddie Nketiah continued his brilliant form since coming into the starting fold for Arsenal, scoring twice from six shots, including the equaliser and the eventual winner. Throughout the game, Nketiah was a constant threat to the United backline, winning two aerial duels and completing one dribble, while also registering nine touches in their box, featuring in attack with a WhoScored rating of 8.66 as a result.
